Poe Springs Park Improvements
High Springs, FL
Located in High Springs, Poe Springs Park is a 202-acre scenic park with easy access to Poe Springs, one of the largest natural springs in Alachua County. Park amenities include a variety of pavilions and picnic shelters, play areas, multi-purpose fields, and volleyball courts. Additionally, the park features loop trails for hiking, a boardwalk trail to the springs, as well as a boat launch and dock for river access.
In 2017, Hurricane Irma’s heavy rainfall and subsequent unprecedented flooding caused significant damage to the boardwalk, canoe launch, dock, and restrooms at Poe Springs Park. To assist in the park’s road to recovery, Alachua County hired JBPro to design various improvements necessary to remediate the damage that occurred during the storm. Major improvements included the removal and replacement of 934 LF +/- of existing boardwalk, adjustment of trails and hardscapes for ADA accessibility, removal and replacement of existing canoe launch stairway, replacement of the floating dock and connections, as well as the addition of a small boardwalk over an inner nature trail slough crossing. To provide improved flood protection, the new 8-foot-wide boardwalk was raised several feet.
Along with our civil engineering services, JBPro provided topographic surveying and construction administration services to facilitate the successful design and construction of the project. Our team also handled coordinating and permitting with the Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD) for the new boardwalk and canoe launch.
In 2021, the newly upgraded Poe Springs Park reopened to the general public, allowing visitors to access and navigate the springs with renewed ease. Overall, the JBPro team is proud to have played a key role in assisting Alachua County with maintaining and preserving Poe Springs Park for the enjoyment of future generations.
