City Hall Plaza Renovation
Gainesville, FL
In 2024, the City of Gainesville hired JBPro for the City Hall Plaza project, an effort to renovate and redesign the plaza to address existing maintenance issues, create a more pedestrian-friendly space, and improve the site’s landscaping, hardscaping, and drainage. The new design will include the construction of a new ADA-accessible ramp into the Northeast Garden, renovation of the existing MLK Memorial Plaza, and the creation of two new green space areas each featuring amphitheater-style seating walls to encourage community use and engagement. To better accommodate official ceremonies and citizen gatherings, the current flagpole will be relocated closer to the City Hall building where a speaking platform will also be installed.
JBPro’s Landscape Architecture team worked closely with subconsultants to incorporate various structural and lighting improvements to the overall set of construction documents. The project also required extensive collaboration and communication with various stakeholders including the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of FL, Inc., the City Arborist, City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department, and the Gainesville Police Department. Following feedback sessions, JBPro designed the plaza to adhere to Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) standards and ensure that sightlines remain unobstructed for safety.
Ultimately, the project was permitted with the City of Gainesville’s Department of Sustainable Development and ensure that all City comments were addressed and revised as necessary. With final design plans rapidly approaching 100% completion, construction is set to begin in November 2025 and be completed in spring of 2026.
